Olive nerite snails (commonly referred to by their scientific name Neritina reclivata) are small, attractive freshwater snails often kept in aquariums for their algae-cleaning abilities. ? Basic Description: Shell Color & Pattern: Typically olive green or brown, sometimes with dark zigzags, stripes, or spotted patterns. The patterns can vary widely, making each snail unique. Size: Usually about ½ to 1 inch (1.3 to 2.5 cm) in diameter. Lifespan: Around 1 to 2 years in captivity, sometimes longer with good care. Shell Shape: Smooth, rounded shell with a flat operculum (the “door” they close behind them). ? Behavior & Traits: Non-aggressive: Peaceful and safe to keep with other aquatic creatures. Algae Eaters: Excellent at cleaning tank surfaces, decorations, and plant leaves. Escape Artists: Like many nerites, they may climb out of the tank if there’s no lid. No Overbreeding Risk: They need brackish (slightly salty) water to reproduce, so they won’t multiply uncontrollably in freshwater. ? Habitat: Native Range: Southeastern United States, especially coastal and brackish areas. Preferred Conditions: Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C) pH: 7.0–8.5 Hard water helps maintain shell health. ✅ Tank Role & Benefits: Keeps glass and surfaces clean. Adds visual interest due to its patterns and slow, graceful movement. Doesn’t harm live plants.
